62,455 total Pontiac Firebirds were built in 1988

Only 8,793 Trans Am models were built,  so just over 14% of the Firebirds were Trans Am models.

The manual transmission was not available with the L98 5.7 TPI engine, the maxinum compatible engine combinations is  51,662.  Only 9,244 manual transmission cars were built.  809 cars were LB9/MM5 combinations.  This leaves 8435 manual transmission cars paired with either the LB8 (V6) or L03 (305-TBI) engines. A manual transmission was installed in 16.5% of these LB8 or L03 equipped 1988 Firebird cars.

19,227 L03 5.0 TBI engines installed in nearly 31% of the 1988 Firebirds

There were 13 different exterior paint colors available.  Plus the option to have an upper body color different than the lower body color.

My 1988 Pontiac Trans Am is:
1 of 8,790 Trans Ams (not including the 3 Trans Am 1LE cars)
1 of 8,435 manual transmission Firebirds (not including the 809 LB9/MM5 cars)
    1 of 19,227 L03 5.0 TBI engine Firebirds
1 of 13 possible upper paint colors
1 of up to 13 possible lower paint colors
1 of 7 interior color schemes

WS6 Suspension Package, manual air conditioning, manual seats, manual windows and locks

All these numbers generally indicate my car was not rare.  The rare status is reserved for the 3 Trans Am 1LE cars.  But, my car falls in to the catagory of "uncommon".  In general, an uncommon car  does not make it anymore valuable than a common car.  In this case, this uncommon car has nearly no creature comfort options, and would be generally undesireable to many people.  However, in my car's case, this was the car I drove when learning how to drive, drove as a high school teenager, and drove in college.  With those memories, this uncommon car is not to be sold for a common car price.

Miscellaneous uncommon 1988 Firebird production numbers:

718 GTA Notchbacks L98 & LB9
809 (US Sales) GTA LB9/MM5
6,913 (US Sales) Hard Top GTA with L98

* These numbers were compiled from several websites.  Some sources had different values, but most agreed to most of the numbers.  I am not trying to indicate this is a rare car as to attempt to increase it's value as none of the original drivetrain is installed.  So if the production numbers are inaccurate, they are just being stated for their entertainment value.
